Recently, Yutong hybrid buses are appearing on the streets of Zhengzhou, Suzhou, Tianjin and some other Chinese cities. It is said these are the latest hybrid products of Yutong. The statistics showed that, running in urban cities, these hybrid buses could cut fuel consumption by about 30 percent. And their prices, after being subsidized by the governments, are almost equal to that of the conventional buses having the same configuration. With 30 percent of the fuel saving effect, this type of hybrid buses is becoming more competitive.

The Yutong hybrid bus has adopted a new generation of diesel-electric power system. The series-parallel connection way can realize the intelligent start-and-stop function of engines, improving the synergy effect of engine and electromotor considerably and achieving the technical advantage of 1+1> 2. Its technical logic is similar to that of Toyota Prius.

In the New Energy Department of Yutong, one guideline is mentioned repeatedly: What the customer bought is fuel-efficient and safe buses, rather than the drive ways. Based on this thought, Yutong combines the conventional technical advantages like lightweight technology, vehicle electronics and so on with the control and drive technology needed by new energy buses, and conducts the technical research of new energy vehicles.  

Peng Nengling, the academic leader of Yutong new energy vehicles, spoke to the reporter vividly, that the products we developed can be deemed as an intelligent system, which collects the energy wasted during the idling, braking and taxiing and changes it into electric power to help drive vehicles, rather than simply using the assistant electromotor-driven way to reduce the fuel consumption of engine.    

A “brain” that can think

It is learned, that Yutong hybrid buses have a mobile control system, which means the manufacturer gives it a “brain” that can think. The “brain” can collect different information during the running of vehicles and control the size of output power through electronic communication way. But the thinking ability of the “brain” relies on the intelligence of designers who need to change all perceived things into mathematical models and then put them into the “brain”. In other words, the more experience the manufacturer has, the more rational the directive sent by the “brain” is, the more efficient the effect will be.

Maximize the value of customers

Deemed as IST hybrid (intelligent start-and-stop technology), it is the highlight that the Yutong design team are proud of. It means, the energy can be collected while the engine doesn’t output power like idling, braking and taxiing statuses. The collected energy will be stored and get involve into driving vehicles. Since the “brain” is smart, Yutong hybrid buses can cut the fuel consumption by 15 to 20 percent, compared to 5 to 10 percent of other counterparts.

To achieve an ideal performance-price ratio, the team of Yutong new energy bus sector has calculated that the fuel cut rate needs to reach 30 percent. Therefore, two measures have been taken, one is lightweight, the other is super capacitor. Through adopting the high-strength steel and structure improvement, a 12-meter bus can cut its weight by three tons, equivalent to saving three-liter fuel per hundred kilometer. Unlike the conventional batteries featuring high cost and low service life, the designed recycle service life of super capacitor is one million times.
